Graduate student Vira is writing a dissertation about the Ukrainian writer Mykola Khvylovy, who shot himself in Kharkiv in 1933 due to the genocide of the Ukrainian people. The action takes place at the beginning of the 21st century, in Kharkiv. Vira is an intellectual, about to marry her beloved Bohdan, a successful businessman. Vira's life changes, when she falls in love with Kirill, a graduate student of the same department. The wedding is canceled, because Vira is in love with two men and is torn between them. They do not retreat from her and compete with each other. The ghost of Mykola Khvylovy appears to her... While writing her dissertation, Vira imperceptibly goes into the astral at the everyday level, communicates with the ghost of Mykola Khvylovy about the meaning of life, literature and her lovers Bohdan and Kirill, about the historical events of the 1930s in Kharkiv, about writers, love and the life of Mykola Khvylovy. Vira is surrounded by the gossip and dirt of the scientific world of Ukraine, the culture of Canada, and the history of Italy. The debunking "myth" about the decency and intelligence of university employees is taking place.

Natalia Levchenko:

Lelya Arey, in her novel “Apрsirantess”, tries to uncover the phenomenon of Mykola Khvylyovyi, in particular his socio-political views, his world outlook and the mystery of suicide, in a thanatological mystical paradigm. The author involves in the plot the spirit of the murdered writer, who in communication with a researcher of his work reveals the details of his biography in both premature and otherworldly life.

The theme of a temporary return to premature life in the plane of the mystical model of life after death is popular in world literature, where the traditional way of communication with the spirits of the dead is a spiritualistic session of mediums.

The heroine of the novel “Apрsirantess” does not need the help of mediums and communicates with the spirit of Mykola Khvylyovyi through direct dialogue without intermediaries. Such an artistic device gives the fact of filling the white spots in the biography of Mykola Khvylyovoyi, and also correlates with the manner of his writing, according to which in the created literary characters the writer reflected the inner world of his own soul, its experiences in three-time planes before death after death, as, for example, in “The Story of the Sanatorium Zone”.

The concept of the textbook is directions, currents, styles, tendencies of the controversial aesthetic paradigm of the border of the 19th-20th and 20th centuries, which was formed as a reaction of intellectual writers to the bloody historical events of the First and Second World Wars, the Cold War, the nuclear threat, and liberation anti-colonial national movements. Emphasis is placed on "common" globalization processes and "special" reflections in national literatures.

The evolution of literature is conventionally divided into three chronological aesthetic periods: the border of the 19th-20th centuries; 1st half of the 20th century; 2nd half of the 20th century. In these periods, the moods in the community of different countries are presented, which caused a resonance that led to the emergence of aesthetic groups. According to the chronological principle, consonantly to the periods, representatives of national literatures are focused.

  1. The border of the 19th and 20th centuries. - the era of decadence, in which decadents, symbolism, impressionism, aestheticism, naturalism, neo-romanticism, verism were formed.
  2. 1st half of the 20th century. - the era of modern, in which the opposition modernism (symbolism, imagism, "stream of consciousness" Acmeism, Freudianism, magical realism) / avant-gardeism (fauvism, futurism, egofuturism, cubo-futurism, Dadaism, surrealism, abstractionism, expressionism, unanimism, cubism, constructivism, imaginism); the phenomenon of existentialism intensified; socialist realism developed as an artificial formation, mass literature was finally established.

III. 2nd half of the 20th century. - the postmodern era, in which Postmodernism, New Novel, Theatre of the Absurd, "Angry Young Men", “Beat Generation”, Working-Class Novel, Neorealism, Minimalism, "New Wave" were formed.

The historical-literary, social, technical, political, national factors, that were formed in different countries - France, Britain, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, USA, Latin America, China, the literature of the indigenous American Indian population are given before the analysis of trends and currents of decadence, modernism, postmodernism, because these tendencies to some extent determined and influenced literary searches.

After the analysis of the directions and currents of certain periods according to the national principle, an understanding of the achievements of outstanding writers is presented, who in their works reflected the aesthetic searches of the time and went down in history.

Attention to the literature of the 20th century explained by the necessity to figure out complex contradictions in order to understand the system and simplify perception, to establish continuity and influence on the works of the 21st century. Searches for writers of the 20th century is a reaction of intellectual resistance to the bloodshed of the First World War, the Second World War, the Cold War, and the post-colonial wars of the second half of the 20th century. Literature of the 20th century reveals the destruction of the individual who suffers from wars and social institutions aimed at leveling the uniqueness of any person. Adequate understanding of the processes of literature of the 20th century gives hope for the continued existence of man in a humanistic peace-oriented world discourse.
